Micro Moments
First micro-fiction of the year
Inspiration just seems to be nowhere to be found lately. Back when I was just started writing fiction, I surprise my group (now disbanded and also nowhere to be found) how I can complete 50k book in 3 weeks (in Filipino, not English). When I wrote In Another Time, my time travel romance back in 2019, I thought I was super slow. I used 5 months to complete the first draft, but when I compare it to now…
My writing progress is too tragic to talk about.
Earlier yesterday, while digging through my old notes, I found this line in my crumple piece of paper: “Stop being wonderful, stop being so sweet… stop. Just stop being a beautifully kind you!” And there, an inspiration for my first micro fiction of 2024. (Gosh, where did the year go?)
Anyway, here’s the story.
The first time he saw her, he thought she was too young to have a five-year-old son. The next time he saw her, she was walking with at least a dozen cats. His mind must have short-circuited because he burst out laughing. They became friends ever since. She’s a single mom and, in fact, a year older than him. He has a lot of women friends, but he can’t look at her the same as them; he loves her son like a father and he’s loyal to her like a puppy. He’s a coward too, so he avoided her when he noticed his feelings.
“What’s wrong with you?” she asked one day. “Why are you avoiding us? My son misses you, I miss you.”
Like a cornered rat, he froze, then fought back. “I can’t!”
She frowned. “Why?”
“Because you’re too wonderful!”
She blushed. “Oh. Thank you.”
“Stop it!” he yelled, and like a broken dam, his feelings flooded out. “Stop being wonderful, stop being so sweet… stop. Just stop being a beautifully kind you!”
“What?” The redness on her cheek deepened, this time with anger. “What the hell, you piece of sh–” she turned on her heel, but he grabbed her wrist.
“Stop making me dream of you because you’re making me fall hard in love with you.”
She turned to him with the softest, brightest smile. “Idiot.”
