A Not So Happy Valentines

My brain has been in a fog for a long long time, and this practically abandoned blog is proof. But I can’t completely abandon it, because hey, a writer need someplace to vent and share stories that bleed out of the pages even if only one person reads it.

And so, here’s a flash fiction for those who don’t agree with happy ever after this Valentine’s Day.

The Last Goodbye

Sitting in the car, waiting for the engine to warm up, I drummed my fingers on the steering wheel. The rain hit the windshield in soft, rhythmic taps, but it didnā€™t do much to calm the storm in my head. I stole a glance at the rearview mirror. She was in the back seat, staring out the window, her reflection barely visible in the glass.

I exhaled sharply. ā€œYouā€™re really going through with this, huh?ā€

She didnā€™t answer right away. Just a small nod. I hated that nod.

ā€œI donā€™t get it,ā€ I muttered. ā€œYou spent all this time fighting to make me love you, and now youā€™re just… walking away?ā€

She finally turned to face me, her eyes unreadable. ā€œItā€™s not that simple.ā€

ā€œSure seems simple to me.ā€

Her hands curled into fists on her lap. She looked like she wanted to say somethingā€”maybe even yell at meā€”but instead, she just sighed. ā€œI donā€™t expect you to understand.ā€

I gripped the wheel. The rain was getting heavier, streaking down the glass like the tears I refused to shed. ā€œYeah, well, of course, I wonā€™t if you don’t tell me.ā€

Silence stretched between us. The kind that suffocates. The kind that makes your chest feel too tight like youā€™re drowning in words you canā€™t say.

She reached for the door handle.

I clenched my jaw. ā€œSo thatā€™s it?ā€

She paused. ā€œWhat do you want me to say?ā€

I didnā€™t know.

The door opened, the cold air rushing in like reality itself.

She stepped out without another word, pulling her coat tighter around her.

And just like that, she was gone.
